This is one of my case study for my print CD cover, as you can see this is a print cd cover of Eminem's Relapse album, the reason why I chose this as one of my CD covers as this reflects the dark theme and has resemblance in genres. The subject of this image is a close up shot of the artist him self symmetrically looking at the camera hence giving the effect that he is directly looking at the audience, this is a very effective technique used in print CD covers as it gives the audience the impression that they are being watched or vice versa where the audience cannot avoid looking. The image itself has been heavily edited with a photo fragment effect which connotes the themes of what you will expect in the music for example a tragedy event that took place or themes of rising from a broken life. The background of the image is black which allows the main image to be vividly seen due to its use in shading as well as the colour black yet again represents the emergence out of darkness as the main image stands out from the background. The parental advisory logo is at the bottom right as conventionally you expect in any cd print covers to be. I Have taken the inspiration of the double exposure effect from this case study as it is a very effective way of portraying two images into one blend, through the perspective of the target audience the binding of two images will effectively symbolise multiple meanings.
This is the inside of the CD case, on the left side you can see a small body of text as well as a image of an artist who passed away (Eminems close friend), this is placed as a memorial on the far left corner which is very unconventional, conventionally you would find a quote from the artist, list of the songs in the cd or a cover art. On the left cover there is an another image of the artist with a long shot of him sitting down with a hand gesture, the background yet again is black as well as the costume in this image of the artist is red, these two colours have been previously utilised in the main CD cover meaning that these colours are part of a colour scheme. On the right side the colour black is again utilised as the background (sticking to the colour scheme) however within the disk holder section there is image of a cup holding pills in a extreme close up birds eye view shot, it looks as if the cd holder itself is the cup with pills in creating a surreal illusion effect. the symbolism behind the pills reflects the theme of drug abuse in the artist's songs. I would like my own inside cover of the Cd to contain a personal message as well as a medium to close up shot of the artist with minimal editing as it will bring realism and a much closer look at the artist through the target audiences perspective just as Eminem has done in his inside (left) cover.
The disk design itself is very clean meaning that there is the use of the white background and red text on top creating a very bold contrast helping the text to stand out as it is very easy to read it. The name of the album is located on top of the disk ring as a mark of branding the album.
This is the back cover of the CD case, as you can see the institution behind this cover utilised a prescription sticker stating the name of the record company as well as the tracks in the disk, it suits the themes of drug abuse which is represented throughout the disk for example inside the disk cover. The barcode is located at the bottom right as it conventionally should be

This is a front cover of the "PLAYING IN THE SHADOWS" album by example, I admire the simplicity of the front cover as the image directly matches the album's title as well as the colour scheme is very striking and vivid with the combination of white, black and yellow. I would like to take the inspiration from this front cover of the use of limited colours as too many colours will make the front cover look very busy resulting to the cover being less appealing to the target audience. The main image of this cover is a close up shot of the artists face with half of his face lit with the dark background and the other side inverted.
On the left inside panel contains the image of a crown from one of examples concert, the image has a black and white effect which gives the nostalgic feel amongst the target audience, I would like to take some inspiration from this and utilise the gray scale technique.

As you can see the CD art itself is a huge logo of the letter E stating the artists name from the initials. The colour scheme of the disk art itself follows the whole CD case colour scheme with the exception of the colour white as this CD art only has a two tone colour scheme, the name of the album and other details is located at the bottom of the disk in the colour black from the background colour yellow (from the letter "e"). The right panel of the inside CD cover is just plain yellow which helps the CD art to stand out as the letter "e" has a black outline (stroke) along the border of the CD.

The CD cover spine is very simple as it contains a white background and a simple black text with no effects, however the letters are all capitalised to represent significance as this is the title of the CD cover. The capitalization of these letters plays an alternate role to editing the text itself (for example making the text bold.), this is a very simple and effective way to make your text stand without any editing at all keeping the simplicity.

This is the back cover of the CD cover, you can see that the barcode is located at the bottom right of the cover following typical conventions of a CD design, however the colour scheme of the back cover does not directly link with the rest of the CD as the major colour which is yellow is missing, the rest of the CD cover contains the colour yellow including the inside panels however the back cover does not. The back cover is not totally out of the colour scheme spectrum as it is still relevant due to the use of the colour black and white but with those colour the back cover doesnt have the uniqueness as the rest of the covers and panels do, learning from this back cover this is what I would avoid doing in my own CD cover.

This is the massive attack artists front CD album cover for the "blue line" album. The cover itself at one glance may seem very simple however the twist of this front cover is the use of a symbol that signifies highly flammable. This is a universal sign of flammable hence this will enable wider ethnics groups to view this CD cover as there is an universal symbol (main image) instead of an artist wearing specific clothing/colour scheme for specific audiences.
On the other hand the back cover has the images of the artists whereas the front doesnt breaking conventions (which is a positive thing because it makes the cover look unique and stands out) as typically it is vise versa .There are small and bold fonts of text stating the track names in the album, they are all center aligned as well as it follows the colour scheme from the front cover, the rest of the CD cover does not cover the colour scheme from the front cover however one may argue that due to lighting of the image at the back cover the skin tones of the artist's match the background of the front cover therefore following the colour scheme, I personally think that it is a plausible point which might not have been intentional.
The spine of the CD cover contains text with the same font style and colour scheme, the font is very big and bold for the spine which is what I would like to do for my CD cover spine as the text will note just be ignored but clearly visible due to the use of the bold effect on the text.
The inside right panel of the CD cover is plain black as well as the CD background is, it is self explanatory that this is due to the institution trying to stick to the colour scheme, however I personally don't like the colour scheme as it is not appealing as well as eye catching, it seems like an empty black canvas, there is more potential in terms of design for the the CD right panel and the CD art
The left panel of the CD cover has a match sticks and the name of the artists which directly refers to the front cover as the front cover had the symbol of highly flammable, the matchstick may perhaps represent the CD itself as metaphorically speaking the CD can unleash flammable content. The Idea of symbolism is constantly again used in this CD design. I want to take the inspiration of symbolism from this cd cover as I believe symbolism is a universal

This is a magazine advert of the games album , the main image of this advert consists of two artists where the left artist is the main artist as the album is created by him however on the right is Dr.Dre who is an iconic rap/Hip hop artist so subsequently adding him in the advert will grab more attention as he has a greater fan base and audience. The backdrop of the main image is white as the main subject is wearing dark clothing in the foreground as well as the car behind the two artists is of a dark silver/grey tone hence making the foreground subject stand out. Moreover a large font stating the artists name is placed in front of the whole main image signifying the fact that this is the artists name. the colour scheme of this advert mostly consists of white, silver/grey and black, the font style they used as the olde english font which is a very prominent font used by the NWA artists.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is an another print advert however what is intriguing about this print advert is the fact that this print advert challenges conventions by utilizing two pages for the advertisement. Lil Jon is the music artist in this advert however the advert seems extremely busy as there is a over exposed use of the colour red as well as there are lots of people in the image, this can be justifiable as one may say that this advert utilised 2 pages of the magazine for the advert hence it is sensible to use lots of background people and props however in my opinion having a bigger canvas doesn't allows mean put more things in, I would like to approach the idea of the artist stance in this advert as this seems very unique to any other I have seen creating a sort of a branding with his pose, I would like to incorporate this into my own media advert.

This is the most inspirational magazine front cover as I plan to use the
blur effect which was utilised in this print magazine advert. This advert is
very symbolic and full of expression as the artist leaning against the wall on the floor and I would like to do something in my advert symbolic like this advert. The colour of this advert is also grey which is very unique to any advert I have seen and this may symbolise the tough times the artist has been through yet again presenting a strong notion of symbolism.

This is a very detailed case study Maninder in which you identify a range of conventions. However you still need to look at two more CD digipacks and three adverts, and these all need to be linked to your own ideas for print products.
